Pet CT Scan

What is PET-CT Scan?

A PET-CT is a combined PET and CT scan used to produce body images. The PET (Positron Emission Tomography) scan uses radiation to create body images. In contrast, the CT (Computed Tomography) scan uses X-rays to create detailed pictures of the inside of the body.

PET-CT

The PET-CT scan can show how well organs and tissues are working and any abnormalities. The PET portion of the scan measures the amount of radioactive glucose taken up by cells. Cancer cells tend to take up more glucose than healthy cells, so they will appear brighter on the PET scan. The CT portion of the scan can then be used to pinpoint the location of these abnormal areas.

PET-CT scans are often used to diagnose cancer, as well as to determine if cancer has spread to other parts of the body.

Types of PET-CT

A PET-CT scan is a diagnostics tool that combines PET and CT scans. It allows for cancer detection and staging, and treatment of the disease.

There are two types of PET-CT scans: whole body and limited. A whole body PET-CT scan takes approximately two hours to detect cancer anywhere in the body. A limited PET-CT scan takes 30 minutes to an hour and is used to focus on a specific area of concern.

PET-CT scans are painless and have no side effects. They are an important tool in the diagnosis and treatment of cancer.
