What does an OPG X-ray consist of and involve?
An OPG X-ray, or orthopantomography, is a diagnostics imaging technique that uses low-dose radiation to produce two-dimensional images, or slices, of the teeth, jaws and surrounding structures. The images are used to evaluate the health of the teeth and jaws and diagnose and plan treatment for conditions such as tooth decay, gum disease and jawbone abnormalities.
OPG X-rays are quick and easy to perform and involve minimal patient discomfort. The procedure is typically performed in an outpatient setting and does not require sedation or anesthesia. Patients bite down on a small plastic device that helps to position the head and jaw during the X-ray process.
Why is an OPG X-ray done?
An OPG X-ray is an imaging test used to look at the teeth, jaws, and surrounding structures. We can use it to help diagnose problems with the teeth and jaws, such as tooth decay, gum disease, or TMJ disorders. OPG X-rays can also be used to plan treatment for dental procedures such as braces or extractions.
